Pottery Painting at World of Wedgwood
There is an inner artist in everyone. Whether you are the next Picasso or love a little paint-by-numbers moment, pottery painting should be on your to-do list this Summer!
On weekends, school holidays and Fridays we open our World of Wedgwood Decorating Studio for both adults and children to get creative with pottery painting. We have tons of objects waiting for you to bring them to life with colour, including mugs, pots, vases and even pet bowls (Cute).
There is only one problem with pottery painting, the creative opportunities are endless, how are you supposed to choose one design to adorn your new favourite piece of pottery? At World of Wedgwood, we understand this struggle and are here to help.
We asked our amazing Creative Studios Team to share their favourite pots to spark inspiration!
Cute
First up, we asked Lindsey our Creative Studios Team Leader to share one of her favourite pieces!
Lindsey 'absolutely loves' this bird because of how featherlike the brush strokes are.
An important step for achieving an even base is the application of at least three layers of base coat. For the feather-like strokes, begin with the lighter colours and delicately stroke your brush in one direction, building gradually with your darker shades.
Funky
Kaitlyn chose this green and white pot that she has thrown herself with jasper wear on our potter's wheel!
It is her favourite because ‘it’s just so cute, isn't it? I mean it's so random!’
To create this design, Kaitlyn used only two glaze colours: green and white. She began by adding 3 coats of the green glaze with a thick paintbrush and sponging to give an even finish. After letting it dry, Kaitlyn painted the white swirl pattern with a thinner brush.
-We love it, Kaitlyn.
Decorative
Lisa loves this spoon rest because it is bright and cheerful!
To achieve this design, you would begin by applying a light pink base colour and then layer up with the darker colours to create your design. This particular piece has been created using glaze colours, giving it a shiny finish once fired in the kiln.
Detailed
Our Creative Studios Manager Sam loves this ‘welcome’ tile because it is bright, textured and the writing is beautiful.
This design has been created using acrylic paint, which means that it can be taken away on the day! You can use the end of a paintbrush to create the dots and write your ‘welcome’ with a pencil first to achieve the perfect handwriting. Not to worry if you don’t stay within the lines, the pencil will burn off in the kiln!
We think this would make a perfect housewarming gift!
So, you have your inspiration, you have a guide to some techniques, what are you waiting for?
Grab your family, friends or treat yourself to a solo date and get ready to fall in love with pottery painting.
