The Benefits of Creativity

When visitors to World of Wedgwood throw a pot in the Master Craft Studio or paint a piece in the Decorating Studio, there are always smiling faces. In 2019 we hosted visits by Strictly Come Dancing’s Shirley Ballas and Signal Radio’s breakfast DJ, Foxy, who both threw a pot and immediately commented how therapeutic it was.

What are the reasons for these smiling faces and positive comments? Is there scientific evidence for this feelgood factor?

A study of 50,000* people found that, regardless of skill level, taking part in activities including pottery and painting helps people to manage their emotions, build confidence and explore solutions to problems. It doesn’t matter what one’s artistic ability or experience is - creative activity is shown to reduce stress in the body,
Engaging in a creative activity allows one’s mind to focus on the task and momentarily frees it from distracting thoughts. It exercises the medial temporal lobes which are responsible for memory, so practicing creativity can also improve one’s memory.

We’ve long known that stress can cause physical health problems, so reducing it can have a positive effect on physical as well as mental wellbeing.

Being creative has been shown to boost self-esteem, confidence and happiness.
