Staffordshire Day

Last year, Enjoy Staffordshire launched a campaign to celebrate the first Staffordshire Day in 2016, to coincide with 1000 years of Staffordshire.

There were five options to choose from, and it was a hotly fought contest but in the end there was a clear winner, which received 36% of the votes - May 1st, the anniversary of the day the world-famous Wedgwood pottery company was established.

The very first Staffordshire Day on May 1st was celebrated in style at World of Wedgwood, with a fine food and artisan craft market along with lots of family fun and festivities to mark this special day.

As well as lots of stalls selling locally produced gourmet food and drink, confectionery, handmade gifts such as jewellery and glassware and garden furniture, there were plenty of attractions that made the inaugural Staffordshire Day truly memorable for visitors.

Fun, games and entertainment were provided throughout the day by renowned jester The Fool Monty.  There was also a maypole, complete with musical accompaniment, which gave both children and adults alike the opportunity to learn some traditional dances.  In addition, The Cultural Sisters, the visual and participatory arts organisation, were running children's craft workshops throughout the day, where visitors could make colourful kites inspired by Wedgwood's floral, bird and butterfly designs using willow, paper, colourful ribbons and twine. 

Play with Clay returned for Staffordshire Day!  Visitors were able to try their hand at the potter’s wheel, and created stunning Wedgwood pots, free of charge. Our Play with Clay sessions are incredibly popular, and we’re beginning to include them in our events more frequently… so watch this space for more free pot throwing!
