Ask a Curator: Who is the most famous person to visit your museum?

Since the museum opened in 1906 we have attracted lots of famous people from many different walks of life. We’ve had famous actors and actresses, celebrities, and our fair share of royal visits.

Our earliest royal visitors came in 1913 when King George V and Queen Mary came to visit the Potteries. Their itinerary took them to several factories, including the Wedgwood Factory at Etruria which was decorated for the occasion. According to accounts that we have in our archives, Queen Mary in particular, who was renowned as a collector, was especially disappointed to have to cut short their visit to the museum. However, both the King and Queen did sign our guest book which we still have today in the collection.
