These beautiful handwritten and painted books preserve for us the greatest gallery of medieval art.

On this study day join Michelle Brown BA, PhD to explore how they were made, meet some of the people who made and used them, see how they developed over a thousand years and start to find out how to 'read' their images.

11.30am – 12pm Coffee break
12pm – 1pm Survey of illumination from c500 to 1500
1pm – 2pm Lunch
2pm – 3pm Words to be seen and images to be read: how is illumination used and what does it mean?
