Artisan Demonstrations | See Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things!

Saturday 17 March 2018, 10am – 4pm | Figure Making and Throwing
Sunday 18 March 2018, 10am – 4pm | Figure Making, Casting, Raised Paste Gilding and Throwing

This Spring we're running a series of Artisan Demonstrations at weekends, there's no need to book just come along to these free events. Check the individual dates to see what skills are being showcased.

See up close the craftsmanship that goes into making Wedgwood and ask our artisans any questions you might have about the process and the skills that have been handed down and honed over generations.

Figure Making | Creating clay figures to decorate the jasperware
See the knocking, waggling and trimming up close. It might look easy but it takes a trained eye and a sure touch, as even the slightest error will ruin a figure.

Raised Paste Gilding | Hand gilding
Perhaps the most elaborate of the decorative styles. Our prestige gilders use a fine brush to apply delicate free-hand strokes, dots and curves before gold is applied.

Casting | See how liquid slip is cast into plaster of Paris moulds
Timing is at the heart of the caster’s craft, they must consider the humidity and clay composition to judge the precise moment when the clay has set.

Throwing | On the potters wheel
Get up close to see how pots are thrown on the potters wheel using the same skills and techniques developed hundreds of years ago.

Demonstrations take place in World of Wedgwood throughout the day, ask at reception for details.
